For student mental health advocates at UofT—and indeed, we hope, beyond—the # symbol has multiple meanings: the number, the channel, the pound, and the hashtag. 4 of them together represent the 4 recent suicides on-campus from June 2018–September 2019 that tie us together; 4 spatial experiences of campus—at UTSG, UTM, UTSC, and UofT as a whole; the 4 times that Aloysius Wong, the co-creator, has experienced untimely deaths—his aunt Lala, a classmate and friend from his program at UofT, Shane Beal, and the three Bahen losses; and finally the 4 grassroots movements that came on board to create this—the UofT Mental Health Policy Council (UTMHPC)How Many Lives (HML); Ashwini and Loizza, 2 of 24 founding members of U of Thrive; and Healing Hearts Through Art (hh2art).
The symbol is one IN SOLIDARITY for all those who we have lost to suicide; all those who have lost someone to suicide; all those who have considered suicide; all those who struggle with mental health issues.
The #### is meant to call everyone into a mutual gathering space where we can raise awareness about these issues and make the suicide on Friday, September 27 the last tragic headline we'll ever read.
We hope that this symbol becomes a symbol for all our health, all our relationships, all our losses, and all our lives. Simply, we hope that this symbol becomes a symbol for all of us.
Remember that you are loved. You are here. You are alive. And "you are you—and that's enough" (Dear Evan Hansen, Finale).
